Poland offers numerous opportunities for foreign workers; obtaining a work visa is the first step toward building a career in the country. Poland has become a leading European destination for foreign workers and immigrants from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and beyond. As a member of the European Union and Schengen Area, Poland guarantees the right to live and work legally on its territory to non-EU nationals who obtain the proper visa and permits. A work visa to Poland is essential if you plan to take up official employment in Poland. This visa (national Type D visa for work) is obtained at a Polish consulate in your country of residence, after securing a job offer and necessary documents. While the overall process is straightforward, it requires careful preparation – knowing all the requirements and steps will help avoid visa denials and reduce processing time.

Why Work in Poland? Poland’s growing economy and low unemployment mean a high demand for foreign labor. Wages for foreign employees have been rising yearly – the average salary now exceeds 5,000 PLN per month (around €1,100–1,200). This level of pay is significantly higher than wages in many Asian or African countries, making Poland attractive for those seeking better opportunities. In addition, Polish labor law offers favorable conditions such as overtime pay for night or weekend work, options for part-time employment, and official contracts that ensure benefits and job security. With a Polish work visa, foreigners can also travel freely in the Schengen zone (up to 90 days in 180 days in other Schengen countries), and they can legally change employers or jobs within Poland (a new work permit from the new employer is required, but no need to obtain a new visa as long as the old one is valid). Compared to other EU countries, the costs and fees for securing a Polish work visa and permit are relatively low, especially given the substantial benefits of legal employment in the EU.

Types of Polish Work Visas and Permits

Poland offers several categories of work permits and long-term visas for non-EU citizens. Each type corresponds to a specific purpose and duration of stay in Poland:

  • Seasonal Work Visa (Type D-05b) – This is a national long-stay visa for seasonal employment (agriculture, horticulture, tourism, etc.). It is based on a seasonal work permit (Zaświadczenie) issued by a Polish local labor office. Validity is up to 9 months in a 12-month period. Processing time for the invitation/work permit: approx. 2–4 weeks.
  • Work Visa (Type D-06) – This is the standard national work visa, issued for up to 1 year and tied to a work permit Type A (Zezwolenie typ A) obtained by an employer in Poland. It allows full-time employment for a Polish company. Processing time for the work permit invitation (voivodeship work permit) is typically 45–60 days.
  • Study/Work Visa (Type D-09) – A national visa for those enrolled in educational programs in Poland (such as a Polish language course, vocational college, or university). It can be valid for 1–2 years depending on the program. This visa may allow limited work rights and can be a pathway to later employment. (Processing time for school admission and invitation: about 2–3 weeks.)
  • Temporary Residence Permit – TRP (Karta Pobytu) – This is not a visa but a residence permit card allowing longer stay in Poland. Typically, a TRP for employment is issued for up to 3 years. A foreigner usually applies for a TRP after arriving in Poland on a work visa and beginning employment. The TRP allows multiple entries/exits and replaces the need for a visa during its validity. Processing time for a TRP can range from 6 to 9 months, but the applicant receives a stamp in their passport upon applying, which allows legal stay and work in Poland during the wait.

Note: EU/EEA citizens do not need a visa or work permit to work in Poland. However, citizens of countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the CIS, etc., must obtain a work permit and visa before commencing employment in Poland. Each country’s Polish consulate may have slight differences in application procedure or extra document requirements, but the core process and criteria remain similar.

Requirements for a Work Visa to Poland

To apply for a Polish work visa (national Type D for employment), you must prepare a set of documents according to Polish and local regulations. All facts and details in your application must be accurate and truthful, as Poland strictly enforces visa rules. Below is the typical list of required documents for a work visa:

  • Valid Passport: Your international passport must have at least 2 blank visa pages and be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from Poland/Schengen. (If you have old passports with visas, those may be required as well for reference.)
  • Visa Application Form: A completed visa application form for National D visa, filled out online (or by hand if required) and then printed and signed.
  • Passport Photos: Two (2) recent passport-sized photographs (3.5 x 4.5 cm) on white background, taken within the last 6 months, meeting biometric photo requirements.
  • Proof of Visa Fee Payment: A receipt showing you paid the visa application fee (the consular fee, typically around €60–€80, though this may vary or be exempt for certain nationalities). If applying via a visa application center, also the service fee (e.g. ~€10–€15).
  • Travel Medical Insurance: Proof of travel health insurance covering at least €30,000, valid for Poland and all Schengen countries, for the duration of your expected stay. This insurance must cover emergency medical care, hospital treatment, and repatriation.
  • Financial Proof: Recent bank statements or financial documents to demonstrate you have sufficient funds to cover your travel to Poland and living expenses for the initial period of stay. (The exact amount required can vary by consulate – ensure you check the guideline, e.g. having at least a few thousand PLN or equivalent available.)
  • Proof of Accommodation: Documents showing where you will stay in Poland. This could be an address of accommodation provided by the employer (e.g. a dormitory or rented apartment, often confirmed through a housing lease agreement or letter), or a hotel reservation if applicable.
  • Work Invitation/Work Permit: Original invitation letter for work issued by the Polish employer and officially registered in Poland. This is the key document that makes your visa “work purpose”. It could be:

- an Oświadczenie (work declaration) or Zezwolenie type A (work permit) for regular employment, or

- a Zaświadczenie for seasonal work.
This document must contain the employer’s details, your personal details (as the employee), the job position, salary, and duration of employment. It must be stamped/approved by the appropriate Voivodeship authorities in Poland and have a registration number. (If you are using Visa-Svit services, we obtain this invitation/work permit for you from the employer.)

  • Employment Contract (Preliminary): A preliminary employment contract or offer letter (Umowa przedwstępna) from the Polish employer, signed by the employer, outlining the terms of employment. (Often included as part of the invitation package.)
  • Additional Supporting Documents: Depending on your country and personal situation, you might need additional documents, such as:

- Tax Identification Number (TIN) – e.g., if required in your country (for instance, applicants from Ukraine provide an identification code).

- Internal passport copy (for countries that have internal IDs) or other ID proof.

- Educational certificates or proof of qualifications – especially if you are being hired as a skilled specialist, you may need to show diplomas, certificates, or relevant work experience letters.

- Cover letter or motivation letter – some consulates ask for a brief letter explaining the purpose of travel and your plans.

- For minors (children): birth certificates, consent letter from parent(s) if child is traveling with one parent, etc., along with documents to apply for their visa (if they accompany you).

Always verify the exact requirements with the Polish consulate or visa application center in your country, as requirements can vary slightly by region. For example, some consulates might require a police clearance certificate or additional legalizations. Missing documents or incorrect information can lead to delays or visa refusal.
